The hashtag. If my memory serves me correctly, the hashtag gained popularity in about 2008/2009. This was right before Twitter took off and I was just learning how to smoke a bong. #College. Initially, hashtags were used to talk about widespread current events aka "Trending Topics". However, in the past seven years their use has drastically changed.
Yes. I just quoted myself and no I do not regret it. It's dramatic. Seriously though, what is the deal with all the hashtags. Social media in general is a topic that I will tackle in later posts don't you worry. Although, right now, are people using hashtags to actually connect? Here is a list of a few that I believe are relevant.
- #AMILLENNIALMOMENT - Duh
- #TGIF - Thank God It's Friday
- #YOLO - You Only Live Once
- #TBT - Throwback Thursday
- #WCW - Women Crush Wednesday *eye roll*
- #MCM - Man Crush Monday *bigger eye roll*
I could keep going for pretty much the rest of my lifetime. Also, people like to create their own hashtags as a way to start a brand or just be funny. (#amillennialmoment) However, when you look under someone's picture on social media #and #all #you #see #is #this #I #think #it's #a #little #too #much.
That Veronica. She's a smart one. I wish I had a solution for what I believe to be a problem. I view the hashtag epidemic as something much bigger than just connecting on social media and having your voice heard. The more hashtags I see it's almost like that person believes they have the voice to be heard. Does that make sense? Yes I am fully aware I write a blog where I, just like everyone else, believe I am the voice of my generation. I get it. But I know I am not the only one silently judging the hashtag use of others.
You can judge the use of mine below.
